Time/Comic Life

As much as I would like to say this was my idea, I can’t take credit for this lesson.  Cathy Brennan had seen a sample of this lesson from another school.  The overall idea of this lesson is simple and the kids had a blast.  Students are always more motivated when they get to use images of themselves in their projects.

Here are the steps for completing this lesson:

1.  Open Comic Life

2.  Drag a template over to the blank page.  We used “Four”.

3. Use the “Capture” feature to collect the pictures.  Our first graders photographed themselves.

4.  After each picture, drag the frozen image into one of the blank boxes.

5.  Use the speech bubbles to show each time.

6.  Save to the student folders.

Create Comics Like an Egyptian

The 2nd graders at Harvie are learning about comic creation in their classroom. To get them ready for using Comic Life the students practiced by creating a page about Egypt.  Intro lessons that use information that the students have already learned, turns the focus from content to the new application that is being learned.  The students started with a custom page that I created[1. I used boxes that the pictures will fit nicely into.], pulled pictures from the server, took their own picture, and added both title and paragraph text to their pages.  Below are some of the examples that were completed today.  Click here to download the template and the pictures.

H21- Carver 5th Grade

The 5th grade students worked in small groups to research and present information about an African American that they believe was important.  This was a student centered project in which the teachers were facilitators instead of direct instructors.  The students were able to pick the person to research, conduct their own research, and then choose the method/tool that would be used to share their information.  Below are a couple of the examples that the students created.

1st Grade Past and Present

Picture 3

This is a modification of the Comic Life lesson.  Comic Life has been having issues with saving, so I remade it to work in Keynote.  The students drop the matching picture into the colored boxes on the Keynote slides.  I have attached the picture, the template, and an exported slideshow from one of my 1st grade Whizzes.

Click twice to play the movie.
